Box Car Racer was formed in 2001 as a side project by Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker from Blink-182. It emerged from a desire to create music with a darker and more experimental sound. The name "Box Car Racer" captures a nostalgic childhood vibe, and the group aimed to explore more serious themes distinct from Blink-182's lighter approach. They released a self-titled album in 2002, but the project was short-lived due to scheduling conflicts and Blink-182's return.
